The Mayor’s Monthly Message – January 2017

1 Feb

Happy New Year/Bonne Année ! Here’s hoping that you had a safe and enjoyable Christmas Season…Remember that food bank donations are particularly low at this time of year, but the need remains high. Any contribution (food items or cash) that you are able to make is greatly appreciated.

2017 promises to be a very exciting year as we Celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, Ontario’s 150th birthday, the 100th anniversary of Lions International and the 10th anniversary of our own Tiny Township Lions Club, …whew we are going to be busy!

A special note from the OPP… Provincial Constable, Susan Jessop – Community Services Officer, Southern Georgian Bay OPP: “Please ask folks to stay off the local Bays, as it’s not safe.” Unfortunately a young woman lost her life over the holidays snowmobiling on Penetanguishene Bay (see attached notice). Please exercise extreme caution around are waterways, they are not safe!

Please see attachments for information on our Tiny outdoor rinks, student summer employment opportunities through the Huronia Historical Parks and an update re County Waste Collection and weather related challenges.

Community Engagement/Events

This past month…..

As I mentioned last month, Deputy Mayor Walma and I, along with many others, participated in the Simcoe County – Eat the Math Challenge, we were each supplied with and lived off of an emergency food bank box for the week of December 5th – 9th. The campaign was held to raise awareness of systematic poverty and challenges with food security. The experience, while nothing close to many people’s reality, certainly helped me gain a perspective. It made me aware of making better choices when donating to the food bank, to appreciate everything I do have and to help start the conversations as to what we can do to make things better… join us in March at our County-wide Food Security Forum to share feedback, ideas and next steps for change! Learn about Basic Income guarantees that could begin to offset financial poverty for many.

I along with the other three local mayors and our MP attended at the Quest Art School and Gallery for the Canada 150 funding announcement for the North Simcoe Canada 150 Mural Project. This large-scale community project will see four murals created for each of the towns of Midland and Penetanguishene and the townships of Tay and Tiny. This project is funded through a $54,758 contribution from the Government of Canada’s Canada 150 Fund, an $8,500 grant from the County of Simcoe, in-kind support from each municipality and a generous donation of paint from Tripp’s Paint and Decorating Shoppe. Look for the Township of Tiny Mural in 2017! (See attached notice).

Tiny Council Updates

I am pleased to advise that Ms. Marie Marchand, a Tiny resident, has been awarded one of the County’s 2016 Post-Secondary Education Bursaries in the amount of $3,000. Twelve of the County’s member municipalities participated in the program with a total of fifteen bursaries given out to deserving students. Congratulations to Marie on her hard work, and we wish her much success in her post-secondary studies. We are making arrangements to recognize Marie at one of our upcoming Council or Committee of the Whole meetings!

We held our 3rd 2017 Budget meeting and we reached a consensus on a recommended municipal tax rate increase of 2%. The draft budget will be presented to Committee on January 30th and then to our Feb. 13th Council meeting for ratification.
